During this museum-wide event, hear about groundbreaking research from Burke and UW scientists; enjoy hundreds of specimens from the Burke鈥檚 collection; and celebrate all things fossilized with fossil digs, ancient animal identification, microfossil sorting, crafts, and more!听

Percussion Ensemble, UW听Steel听Band and Gamelan Ensemble:听“World Percussion Bash”

The UW Percussion Ensemble (Bonnie Whiting, director) presents a year-end performance shared with the UW Steel Drum Band (Shannon Dudley, director). The Steel Band performs听a mix of calypso and salsa classics, as well as an original composition by graduate student Emily Silks. The Gamelan Ensemble 辫别谤蹿辞谤尘蝉听补听Gendhing听bonang (a traditional composition for听bonang gong chimes, one-octave metallophones, gongs, and drums) and a masked dance (tari top猫ng) from the regency of Malang in east Java.听The UW Percussion Ensemble performs Carlos Chavez’s historic听Toccata听(1942) alongside newer experimental works by Nat Evans, Rachel Walker, Jeffrey Trevi帽o, and Eugene Novotney.

UW Symphony and Concerto Competition Winners

David Alexander Rahbee conducts the UW Symphony and winners of the 2022 Concerto Competition in an end-of-year performance. Performing with the orchestra are Hannah Chou, violin (Korngold Violin Concerto, Mvt 1); Megan Hutchison, flute (Nielsen Flute Concerto, mvt 1); and HyeYeon Kim, piano (Chopin Piano Concerto No.1, Mvt. 1).

Ziadeh Lecture: A New Era of the United States and the Middle East with Vali Nasr

This annual lectureship hosted by the UW Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization was established in honor of Farhat J. Ziadeh, whose contributions to the fields of Islamic law, Arabic language, and Islamic Studies are truly unparalleled.
Vali Nasr is the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University. He has advised senior American policy makers, including the President, Secretary of State. Between 2009 and 2011 he served as Senior Advisor to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. He is the author of The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in Retreat; Forces of Fortune: The Rise of a New Middle Class and How it Will Change Our World; The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam will Shape the Future and Democracy in Iran: History and the Quest for Liberty.
