This winter, the Cornish College of the Arts Theater and Performance Production Departments, Seattle University Theatre, and the 天美影视传媒 School of Drama have come together for a cross-town theatrical collaboration the likes of which Seattle has never seen. Seattle University鈥檚 Rosa Joshi听directs William Shakespeare鈥檚 Twelfth Night, while Cornish College of the Arts鈥 Sheila Daniels听and UW Drama acting alum Porscha Shaw听co-direct Bodies of Water, a devised piece in response to themes in Shakespeare鈥檚 play. Both productions feature student casts from all three schools, and the artistic and production work of students, faculty, and staff from all three schools, and both will be rehearsed and performed entirely online.

Anne Searcy: “Understanding the Dance of Hamilton”

The Broadway show听Hamilton: An American Musical听has generated an astounding level of popular acclaim, critical success, and political discourse, most of it centered around the musical鈥檚 writer, composer, and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.听听Additionally impressive, but less examined so far, is the striking and unusually central role played by Andy Blankenbuehler鈥檚 choreography. In this talk, the first of this series, music history professor Dr. Anne Searcy discusses how dance works as a central part of听Hamilton听and explores the implications that the choreography has for the political discourse around the celebrated musical.

UW Dance Presents

The Department of Dance is excited to present new works from nationally and internationally recognized choreographers Rujeko Dumbutshena, Alana Isiguen, Rachael Lincoln, Juliet McMains, “Majinn” Mike O’Neal, and Jennifer Salk, with guest artists Alex Dugdale听and Alice Gosti.
Presented digitally, these explorations of dance on film examine themes ranging from human connection and identity to the joy of rhythm and music as movement. The new works, generated from a diverse range of movement styles, feature dancers set against local Seattle backdrops including Magnuson Park and on stage at Meany Center for the Performing Arts. The performances feature new collaborations and several original music compositions, including by Zimbabwean-born local Seattle artist Paul Mataruse and compositions by music students Griffin Becker and Lucas Zeiter performed by the Wind Ensemble.

ONLINE 鈥 Mark Morris Dance Group & Music Ensemble: Mozart Dances

Mark Morris鈥 joyful and sublime听Mozart Dances听is a masterpiece of movement and music. Set to three exquisite Mozart piano works, the choreography is buoyant and exhilarating, exemplifying why Morris is revered as 鈥渢he most artfully musical choreographer alive鈥 (The New York Times). In this virtual, online听performance of the transcendent evening-length trilogy, the company鈥檚 own music ensemble provides live music for the lyricism and astounding precision of the Mark Morris Dance Group, with stunning scenic design by celebrated abstract painter Howard Hodgkin (Layla and Majnun).

UW Museums Reopen听
Many of the UW’s on-campus museums, including the , the , and the have reopened for COVID-19 safe visitation from the public. New exhibits include the Henry Art Gallery’s听Bambitchell: Bugs & Beasts Before the Law and听Plural Possibilities & the Female Body. All students, faculty, and staff can attend these museums for free.
Barbara Earl Thomas: The Geography of Innocence

UW alum Barbara Earl Thomas鈥 new body of work at the Seattle Art Museum carries within it the sediments of history and grapples with race and the color line.听At the heart of her new work is a story of life and death, hope and resilience鈥攁 child鈥檚 survival. She takes us on a journey where she gives us clues, tracks and traces鈥攖he raw elements of the armor, like the one Black parents construct for their children at birth, to help them navigate the perilous landscape that is our country鈥檚 color problem.
