The , a grant fund for sustainability research projects at the UW, will award money to six projects that contribute to the university’s sustainability goals, are well-planned and achievable and will help the UW reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The six winning projects for 2015 will share about $250,000 in grant money and were chosen by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

The projects are:

  • : This UW Tacoma project will create a friendly competition between students, faculty and staff to lose carbon weight. The competition will use social networks to spread challenges among the UW Tacoma community.
  • : This project will identify electronic waste from campus that’s being sent to landfills and create recycling and reuse stations for the waste to be collected on campus.
  • : Participants will look at durable medical equipment reuse and recycling at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center to reduce non-recoverable waste at the hospitals.
  • : This project will try to increase the use of public transportation by UW Tacoma students through bus lines with no transfers.
  • : This study aims to demonstrate that lighting retrofits can generate significant energy savings and improve user experience, ultimately leading to better worker performance.
  • : A continuation of a 2014 Green Seed Project, this award will allow completion of the research project on the potential benefits of the Gould Hall Green Wall.
