To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of declining phytoplankton in the North Atlantic may have been greatly exaggerated. Analysis of a Greenland ice core going back 800 years shows that atmospheric chemistry, not dwindling phytoplankton populations, explains the recent ice core trends.

Single-celled organisms in the open ocean use a diverse array of genetic tools to detect sunlight, even in tiny amounts, and respond. The discovery of these new genetic 鈥渓ight switches鈥 could also aid in the field of optogenetics, in which a cell鈥檚 function can be controlled with light exposure.

In a comprehensive study of healthy corals published Nov. 22 in the journal Nature Communications, a team of scientists from the 天美影视传媒 Bothell, Pennsylvania State University and Oregon State University report that coral bacteria are a surprisingly diverse bunch 鈥 and that different sections of the coral body can host unique communities of bacteria.

A 天美影视传媒 team has shed new light on a common but poorly understood bacteria known to live in low-oxygen areas in the ocean. By culturing and sequencing the microbe’s entire genome, the oceanographers found that it significantly contributes to the removal of life-supporting nitrogen from the water in new and surprising ways.
