Entrepreneurship programs at the 天美影视传媒 ranked in the top 10 for 鈥淏est Entrepreneurship Program,鈥 according to a ranking produced jointly by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine.

The lists the 50 undergraduate institutions and 50 graduate institutions with the best offerings in entrepreneurship studies, from an analysis of nearly 300 schools.

The UW is one of only five schools in the nation to be ranked this year in the top 10 on both the graduate and undergraduate side. It鈥檚 the first time in the 18-year history of the ranking that the UW鈥檚 undergraduate program, which placed No. 9, and the graduate program, at No. 7, both made it to the top 10.

Based on a survey of administrators, the ranking tallies took into account more than 40 data points about the schools鈥 entrepreneurship programs, faculties, students and alumni, according to The Princeton Review.

Entrepreneurship programs at the UW are housed in the Foster School of Business, the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship, CoMotion, the College of Engineering, UW Bothell, UW Tacoma and GIX.

A commitment to innovation powered the 天美影视传媒 to a by The Princeton Review. The 2021 ranking marks an all-time high 鈥 solidifying UW and the Foster School of Business as a leader in entrepreneurial education and incubation within the Pac-12 and across the Western United States.

The Princeton Review sent to more than 300 undergraduate and graduate schools offering entrepreneurship studies. The survey looks at the opportunities for aspiring student entrepreneurs both inside and outside the classroom including the quality and quantity of courses, faculty and mentors available.

鈥淲e are a world-class innovative community built on the impactful work and collaboration of the Foster School鈥檚 Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship, our faculty and partners like UW CoMotion across the UW,鈥 said , Orin and Janet Smith dean of the Foster School. 鈥淭he insights we foster together will better humanity and propel us forward for a better tomorrow.鈥

UW and the Foster School also rose seven spots . The 40+ survey data points in the ranking methodology include the number of startups founded by recent alumni. Over the past ten years, graduate alumni have launched more than 540 ventures independent of the school and brought in over $270 million in fundraising and investment. During the same timeframe, undergraduate alumni launched more than 468 independent ventures and raised over $85 million.

During the past five years, executed more than 1,950 licenses and spun out 73 startups which have gone on to raise over $4.4B in funding. Today, UW spinoffs employ more than 4,000 people in the state of Washington.

UW education and programming work in symbiosis with one of the top startup ecosystems in the world.聽In FY 2018, the university drove $15.7 billion in economic activity for the state. In late January, UW created an Innovation Roundtable featuring leading venture capitalists, angel investors and innovative leaders. UW also launched a new Innovation Imperative website focused on both the on-campus and regional entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The Foster School鈥檚 and operate as hubs for community, faculty and student collaboration 鈥 working with colleges and department across the UW-Seattle, Tacoma and Bothell campuses (as well as the which operates in partnership with China鈥檚 Tsinghua University and Microsoft) to connect students to major VC firms, angel investing groups and entrepreneurs in every industry in the region.

The Buerk Center open to colleges and universities across the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Alaska 鈥 as well as the non-academic program. Since 2010, more than 85% of those who received seed funding from the Accelerator are still in business today.

鈥淥ur commitment to empowering students to create impactful ventures has never been stronger,鈥 said , director of the Buerk Center. 鈥淲e believe in creating academic and extracurricular experiences with both depth and breadth while also supporting dedicated initiatives to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Foster School features the (YEOC), a six-week end of summer program, as well as a women鈥檚 . In 2020, UW鈥檚 signature had female students as founders or cofounders on 37% of the 97 teams that competed.

Entrepreneurship students are also given the access and opportunity to participate in programs in partnership with global leaders such as , , the , the , as well as fellowships in technology commercialization and social entrepreneurship.

In the past several years, UW also partnered to the at CoMotion, , and the WE-REACH Biomedical Entrepreneurship Center, among others.

The honor recognizes the UW’s dedication to research and development of transformative clean energy technologies, facilities, pipelines for startups and industry partnerships.

The award on Nov. 8 at the annual meeting and 10th anniversary of the CleanTech Alliance, a Seattle-based consortium of more than 300 businesses and interest groups across six U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The organization cited the UW’s support for “the region’s cleantech talent pipeline, R&D base, infrastructure and connectivity to the world.”

“We’re honored to receive this recognition from regional business leaders for UW’s energy science and engineering scholarship and work to accelerate cleantech in the Pacific Northwest,” said , director of the UW-based Clean Energy Institute and professor of chemical engineering. “The Clean Energy Institute has been purposeful in sending UW students out to engage regional industry and government 鈥 and we have proactively sought industry input in the development of our vision for clean energy innovation and open-access facilities.”

The CleanTech Alliance has presented two Achievement Awards annually since 2007, one to an organization and the other to an individual. In this year’s organization award, the Alliance cited the UW’s ongoing contributions to clean energy research and discovery across campus; pipelines for commercial development and opportunities for industry partnerships through the and ; and programs such the , now in its聽10th聽year, through the Foster School of Business’s .

“The 天美影视传媒’s impact on our cleantech sector is both significant and vast,” said CleanTech Alliance President and CEO J. Thomas Ranken. “Each year, the University sparks clean technology innovation through both its research and curriculum and then fans the flames by encouraging entrepreneurship and startup growth.”

In the UW’s nomination for the award, supporters and industry partners noted groundbreaking discoveries in cleantech and alternative energy that have come from UW faculty, staff and students in the College of Engineering, the College of Arts & Sciences, the CEI and the Molecular Engineering & Sciences Institute. UW research in these fields ranges from smart grids and innovative energy storage technologies to solar cell materials and ultrathin semiconductors.

Achievements in these areas have made the UW a lead recipient of grants and funding for research and innovation. For example, UW is regularly a聽top 10 university recipient of Science Office聽funding from the聽U.S. Department of Energy. The National Science Foundation also recently awarded the university $15.6 million for a and $3.8 million to the CEI for , a cleantech data science training program.

The CleanTech Alliance also lauded the university’s partnerships, innovations and pipeline-building endeavors to move discoveries from the bench to the production line. The CEI, for example, the to provide researchers and industry partners with much-needed proving grounds and scale-up facilities for clean technology manufacturing and research. UW-based research has also led to startups for cleantech enterprises that were launched through CoMotion, the CEI and UW colleges.

“The technologies and startups spinning out from the 天美影视传媒 get stronger every year and will clearly continue to do so for years to come,” said Ranken.
