UW Tacoma launches Institute for Global Engagement

UW Tacoma will launch the Institute for Global Engagement聽October 3rd. The new campus center, grown from the program, will聽increase student access to Global Honors coursework, foster increased campus engagement聽with the Tacoma community and create additional undergraduate research opportunities.聽The institute’s first initiatives will include聽study abroad presentations during聽International Education Week in November and a lecture series.

Burke Museum exchange connects Washington and Filipino communities

Burke Museum聽project manager Lace Thornberg (MA, 2010) developed a program connecting tribal community members from Washington with residents of a remote island in the Philippines. Washington and Filipino community members made transcontinental visits for cultural exchange and are now building unique museum exhibits based on their experiences.

UW Bothell to host Global Engagement through Technology Symposium

On September 12,聽university faculty and staff聽from the Pacific Northwest and beyond will gather at UW Bothell for a symposium on the use of technology to further students’ global engagement. Hosted by UW Bothell Global Initiatives and the Teaching and Learning Center, the symposium will provide strategies for聽integrating聽international collaboration components into university coursework聽and allow educators to share best practices for聽creating a physical and virtual learning community.

Registration is open now for the Global Engagement through Technology Symposium, and participants may sign up until September 11. 聽An聽Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Area and International Studies grant, administered by the UW Jackson School of International Studies, has allowed organizers to offer the event at a reduced rate to participants. 聽

Global architecture award goes to UW alum

天美影视传媒 alumnus聽Steven Holl, a native of Bremerton and leader of in New York City, received a聽. The Japan Art Association gives the honor聽each year to recognize lifetime achievements in painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theater or film.

International researchers track melting sea ice

Led by聽principal investigator聽, an oceanographer at the 天美影视传媒鈥檚 Applied Physics Laboratory, researchers from around the world are conducting the longest and most extensive effort ever to track the melting of arctic sea ice. Members of the international research team hail from聽the聽United States, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and France.
